Contractors to tackle bamboo at Lodge Hill

The Turner Dumbrell Foundation would like to apologise for any disruption along Boddington’s Lane and the adjacent land at the bottom of Lodge Hill this week, as contractors are due to start work on bamboo clearance on Monday September 9.

The Foundation is in the first year of a five-year plan to revitalise Lodge Hill to encourage a greater diversity of native plants and animals. However, we have identified a problem at the bottom of Lodge Hill with bamboo, which has invaded from a neighbouring site. This non-native, highly invasive and fast-growing menace will swamp all plant life in the vicinity if left unchecked, so we have had volunteers trying to clear it at regular intervals. However, despite their best efforts it only seems to come back with greater intensity and the area affected is slowly expanding.

For this reason, as a last resort, we have engaged specialist contractors who will be stripping out the top soil in the affected area to ensure every last trace of bamboo is removed. This has to be done because if even a single root is left it will quickly grow back. The soil will be taken off site in dumper trucks and carried along Boddingston’s Lane and up North End to the car park of the Turner Dumbrell workshops where it will be collected by bigger trucks.
